Blue Heron Bridge Walk Join The Waltham Land Trust for a short walk to the beautiful new Blue Heron Bridge. The Department of Conservation and Recreation's new pedestrian bridge, opened last summer, spans the Charles River and connects Newton from the Cheesecake Brook to woodlands on the opposite bank in Watertown. Meet in the southeast corner of the Stop & Shop parking lot at 700 Pleasant St, just over the Waltham/Watertown line

Beaver Brook Reservation North Walk Join The Waltham Land Trust to explore the Department of Conservation and Recreation's newest reservation, 254 acres located on the grounds of the old Met State Hospital. Beaver Brook North is now open to the public and we will traverse some of the old carriage paths and smaller side trails. The reservation contains a wide variety of natural communities, including upland forests and meadows, forested wetlands, emergent marshes and wet meadows with certified vernal pools. Meet at the Elsie Turner Field, 421 Trapelo Rd.

Smith Point Acquisition Celebration. Join The Waltham Land Trust on the shore of Hardy Pond near Lazazzero Playground (Lake Street at Shore Road) to celebrate the first land purchase by the Waltham Land Trust. There will be a re-enactment of the deed transfer, games, refreshments and music, plus kayaking to Smith Point. The Hardy Pond Association is co-sponsor. Waltham Land Trust Shady's Pond Conservation Area Walk. Join The Waltham Land Trust to explore the City's newest open space acquisition, land formerly owned by Our Lady's Parish on Trapelo Road. Shady's Pond Conservation Area contains mature woods with a fern-covered floor, pine and oak covered ridges, a pond and cattail marsh, and a cascading stream that runs into Chester Brook Park. The meeting will open to the public at 7:30 PM with refreshments and a presentation by Paul Hellmund, co-author of Designing Greenways (2006) and the co-editor of Ecology of Greenways (1993). Mr. Hellmund is the Director and a core faculty member at the Conway School of Landscape Design. The focus of his design, research, practice, and teaching is improving the relationship between people and nature, especially in urban, suburban, and degraded landscapes. He was supposed to come home in August 2006 but his tour was extended indefinitely. Her family learned of his extension via television. Family Wagon Rides At Gore Place Gore Place, the early 19th century historic house in Waltham, sponsored by RTN Federal Credit Union, will offer games, refreshments, music and a tractor-drawn wagon-ride around the farm fields of the 45-acre estate. Come early and visit the farm with sheep, goats, chickens and llama. Admission is $5. Gore Place and RTN Federal Credit Union members ride for free. Olmsted National Historic Site, on Thursday, November 2 at 7:00 p.m. The firm Frederick Law Olmsted founded more than a century ago was involved in over 1,200 landscape architecture projects throughout Massachusetts, ranging from expansive 500-acre public parks to intimate private gardens. One of its greatest achievements is a six-mile "emerald necklace" of ponds, parks, and parkways that winds its way through Boston. The one-hour slide lecture will sample this rich landscape legacy and explore the ideas that shaped some of the most treasured lands in Massachusetts. The talk will be held at Stonehurst, The Robert Treat Paine Estate and offered by The Friends of Stonehurst and the City of Waltham, Jeannette A. McCarthy, Mayor. I have a total of 19 years of military service, active, reserve and guard. I was a staff sergeant and squad leader. My unit was tasked with base security; we were at a base north of Tikrit, near the town of Baiji, home to the largest oil refinery in Iraq." A Full Moon Tour of the Gore Mansion Gore Place, the historic Governor Gore estate in Waltham, will present a special evening tour of the mansion entitled: A Full Moon Tour. Visitors will join a guide, dressed in period costume, for a tour of the 1806 mansion. The tour tells stories of the Gore's gracious lifestyle, the work of the many servants, the politics of the time and the advanced technologies introduced by the Gores. Furnished in period style, the mansion is considered one of the finest examples of early 19th century architecture in America and features a spiral staircase, marble floors and oval parlors. The doors open at 6:30pm. The tour begins at 7pm. Admission is $12 general admission, $8 children 5-12.
